Colour explosion in an art book: Cloud Cuckoo Land printed in Fogra 59

Josephina van de Water of Paracosm House is a multidisciplinary artist who creates fascinating fictional worlds. With her first art book, “Cloud Cuckoo Land”, she wanted to faithfully reproduce these fantastic worlds on paper and bring them to life.

From digital to something tangible

Josephina van de Water’s projects include paper sculpture and stop motion films, in which each frame is hand-coloured, like in early colour films. This special art book had to meet exacting standards to remain as faithful as possible to the intense colours and associated ambience. Each detail had to be just perfect for this limited edition of just 250 copies.

Our team oversaw the entire process: from selecting the right printing techniques for a small print run to the most suitable paper to do justice to the stunning colours. A magical collaboration between the artist and Albe De Coker.

The challenge

The challenge was threefold:

  • Colour fidelity: the bright, vibrant colours of Josephina’s work had to be perfectly reproduced without any loss of nuance or intensity.
  • Material and print quality: both the transparent PET cover and the interior pages on uncoated thick paper had to be printed to a high standard.
  • Cost control: because this was such a small print run, traditional Hexachrome offset was not an option.

Fogra 59 Inkjet for a greater colour gamut

We used Fogra 59 inkjet printing for this art book. This digital technique has a greater colour range than offset. Both the PET cover and the interior pages on uncoated thick paper were printed on the same press for maximum colour consistency. The project was both efficient and cost-effective, with proofs printed on the final paper stock, without plates or additional press costs.
